Internet/ World Wide Web/ Bluetooth

Write a 7-8 paragraph blog post answering these questions, pictures/screenshots are welcomed, cite your sources.

• what is Internet, who founded/created it, when and why,  how was it used originally and how it is used today

It is hard to pinpoint one person as the creator of the internet, as it was the work of many scientists, programmers, and engineers. They explored and developed new technologies that led to the internet and beyond. However, computer scientists Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn are credited for inventing the technology for what we today know as the internet. They were responsible for developing the technology called Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, which created guidelines for data to be transferred from one computer to another.

  •  what is World Wide Web , who founded/created it, when and why,  how was it used originally and how it is used today

The World Wide Web was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. When working as a software engineer at CERN, he noticed that the company struggle with sharing information on computers. In attempt to solve this problem, he created the World Wide Web by exploiting the technology called hypertext. By October 1990, he created three fundamental technologies; HTML, URIM and HTTP.

•  are they the same, different, do they work together, separate, side by side

The internet and The World Wide Web are not the same thing, but they are often used interchangeably. The internet is the connection between countless, separate servers on computers and devices. The World Wide Web is a medium for exchange of information on the internet. Though The Web isn't the only way to navigate the internet, it has become the standard. They certainly work together, as you can't access the World Wide Web if the internet isn't working.

•  when was the first website created, who created it, is it still up, if yes, post the url.

The first website was created in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee. It was first originally used for Berners-Lee's company CERN to use to exchange information and it wasn't until 1991 that people outside of CERN were invited to use it. He then realized the potential of his technology and in 1993 the World Wide Web became open to everyone on a royalty-free basis.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Lamarr

•  what is the connection of Hedy Lamarr to WiFi and Bluetooth, who was she, is there a song about her, if so - why

Hedy Lamarr, was a successful American film actress in the Golden Age of Hollywood. She wasn't only that however, she was also an inventor, who is responsible for the fundamental technology called "frequency hopping" in 1942. This technology ultimately led to the development of what we know today as Wifi and Bluetooth. There is indeed a song about her, called "This is a song for Miss Hedy Lamar" by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp. The song expresses how unappreciated Hedy was as she signed her invention off to the military and never received a dime for her creation.

•  who and when developed Bluetooth, who named it, why the logo looks like it does.

Ericcson, the swedish telecommunications company developed Bluetooth in 1990, when they were attempting to create a technology that allowed personal computers and wireless headsets to be linked. The team was made up of  The name alludes to Danish King Harold, who was responsible for uniting Denmark and Norway during the 10th century. The company felt that their invention encompassed the same unity with technology. The logo is a Viking inscription that merge's the King's two initials.

•  who and when developed WiFi, original name of WiFi, when and how it was named.

It is hard to pinpoint one person that developed WiFi in 1977, Hedy Lamarr's invention of frequency hopping was certainly a huge part of it, as well as inventors Dr. John O'Sullivan, Dr. Terry Percival, Diet Ostry, Graham Daniels, and John Deane. A man named Vic Hayes has been deemed "The Father of Wifi" because he chaired the IEEE committee that set up standards allowing Wifi to be regulated. Before it was called wifi, it was called IEEE 802.11. Wi-fi became it's name as a more marketable and user-friendly technology.
